A couple of weeks ago, we went on a college visit for an open house that the University of West Florida was having and discovered that Pensacola not only has a fine place to educate your children but also enjoy the surf nearby at Pensacola beach with their big waves during parts of the year. On the day of our visit, it happened to be quite windy, there happened to be a bunch of surfers riding the waves, and my daughter happened to be quite exhilerated imagining herself as a college student coming to the beach on the weekends to go surfing. We'll see. We still have a lot of other universities in Florida to visit yet! Anyway, here's my take on the University of West Florida. The new President seems inspirational and reports herself as well as the professors as ones who forge new paths and focus primarily on high quality undergraduate education - offering more flexibility without so much bureacracy and the "no's" you might get at other educational institutions. They emphasized here is where you can get more support and encouragement to go "outside the box" in research, teaching, or learning. This university does not offer as many graduate degrees and does not emphasize graduate degree programs as much as they do their undergraduate degree programs. Also, there's no football team here (yet) so if that's important to you, look elsewhere. However, if you want a smaller university where professors are more likely to get to know you, or if you like any of their specific degree offerings, some of which are unique and not offered that easily elsewhere (such as an undergraduate marine biology degree), or enjoy a bunch of enthusiastic college students (wow, there was a good showing of dancing, chanting, and exhuberantly cheering students around during the open house!), then give this university a visit! http://www.uwf.edu |

Dear Floridians, Florida vacation visitors and Florida enthusiasts, Welcome to HugFlorida.com, "The place online for folks who love Florida." Why did we name this site HugFlorida.com? Because when you love someone, you want to hug, and take care of them -- well, in this case, it's an entire state that we want to hug because it is so special and dear to us! It's easy to fall in love with Florida. We moved here after our college years and never regretted it. After raising children here, enjoying many cultural and art offerings, festivals, beach and boating, nature- it's both a city and country lifestyle- we wanted to help others through this website discover the many blessings available for you in Florida. We truly appreciate Florida's beauty, exciting places to visit, interesting people to meet, cultural diversity, waterfront views and activities, nature and wildlife, fine warm weather with gentle breezes, and overall lifestyle advantages. If you suffer from the cold weather up north, we really recommend living in Florida at least part of the year, until your weather up North becomes milder. We believe that "If You Hug Florida... Florida Will Hug You Back." To us that means, if you help her and love her, say and do things to support her, then Florida will continue to delight you with her many treasures. Therefore, we encourage you to do your part and to find ways to hug Florida back! We hope this site will help you discover more about Florida and if you want to vacation in, live, work, or play in Florida, then this site will also help to connect you to Florida information you'll want to know. For example, review articles and advertisements to find vacation rentals, Florida businesses, and learn interesting information about different areas as well as fun and sometimes "off-the-beaten track" things to do while you're in Florida. See the Florida map section and feel free to share with us anything you think would make a good addition to this site. Example Of Exciting Moments In Florida
On Oct 24, 2007 The Space Shuttle Discovery soared into space after a spectacular lift-off blaze. With so many things to do and see on a year-round basis in Florida, this state is not only a warm winter escape for our friends from up North, but also a wonderful place to live throughout the year. It's a great place to enjoy raising our families and to enjoy our retirement years!
If you know you love Florida, please contribute to the site and give Florida a hug! We appreciate links to this site from your blogs, sharing your discovery of Hugflorida.com on social networking and bookmarking sites and elsewhere. When you visit new places in Florida and as you discover new resources, things to do and see, people to know, places to visit, and natural wonders to preserve, please send them in to us so we might consider including them here. This will help keep the site growing with more interesting sights, sounds, and information about Florida for all of us to learn from! Thanks so much! Seaside breezes and gentle hugs to you...
